Altitude still going strong!!

As we enter the final day of Altitude 2012 it’s hard to deny the sense of community that has grown between the festival-goers, Altitude staff and the comics. The beautiful resort of Mayrhofen has one main street where most people can be seen between gigs, be it returning or collecting skis and boards, or feasting on some of the delicious Austrian food and drink on offer all along the strip. As co-creator Andrew Maxwell said at last night’s Gala, it’s not like anyone attending is unfamiliar with each other. On the slopes all day and at comedy all night. A niche market, I suppose, but it certainly shows that everyone attending the festival has at least two interests in common which make for easy connections. There is a lovely atmosphere at these gigs and around the resort as a result. Maxwell continued, making the point of how challenging a festival it is for the comics. Nearly every performer had at least two gigs to deliver, but to the same people. Both Benny Boot and Ben Norris asked the audience who had seen them the night before and finding 80-90% had been at the other gigs, successfully stepped away from their usual 20 and smashed the gig despite it. Benny Boot had gained so many fans from the night before that he performed Altitude’s first ‘Joke Encore’ where audience members demanded he repeat one of their favourite jokes and even said it along with him!

Thursday night’s Gala show featured performances from Craig Campbell, Rufus Hound, Andrew Maxwell, Marcus Brigstocke, Phill Jupitus (pictured) and Tim Minchin. As we’ve grown accustomed to, the night was a great success! Between stories of Craig’s morphine madness, Maxwell’s kidnapping and Rufus deciding he would pick up from where he left off last night in today’s show, Minchin’s musical skills were the only way to bring it to a close. The crowd swarmed in to the Late Late Show afterward all a’buzz with his charm. The late show saw Terry Alderton wake an audience member in the front row and throw him on stage with the simple direction ‘Now be funny!’. Chairs were thrown and fire extinguishers wheeled out on trolleys. That’s the kind of night we had and that’s the kind of night everyone wanted. The fab Tiernan Douieb, Andre Vincent and Terry Alderton opened the first half, followed by compere Matt Reed, Andi Osho and Benny Boot for the second. The final two shows will take place today, with a comedy marathon gala show this evening from 7pm and another late show to close us out. Hard to believe the festival is nearly at an end. Best make the most of the time left; to the slopes!

Yet more fun and frolics at Altitude!

We’re not sure if the greatest moment of Wednesday at Altitude came when Phill Jupitus whispered the words ‘bear disco’ at Tiernan Douieb, provoking giggles and the telling of the story that fits in a tweet: “Todays @AltitudeComedy highlight: partaking in naked bear disco in a ski lift with Phil Jupitus & Andre Vincent scaring passing gondolas”. Amazing. OR perhaps it was seeing Terry Alderton and Mike from The Cuban Brothers clatter to the floor of the bar in a moment of mountainside horseplay. Or maybe it was the moment Terry (again), an audience member and Andrew Maxwell danced shirtless to a hand raising Panjabi MC’s Mundian De Bach Ke.

Yesterday was another amazing day of comedy at the Altitude Festival. The improv boys proved why they’re the best in the biz with another great performance in the Piste Takers Inn which was then prepared for The Cuban Brothers show later that evening (YES FRIENDS!). Not that anyone could ever really be prepared for the Cubans. The room filled, Kengo threw shapes and Miguel stripped off. Brilliant. Then we were on to the comed-athon. Three MCs, three sections and another incredible line up. The GetComedy crew smashed it, with great performances from Tiernan Douieb, Tiff Stevenson, Matt Reed and an absolute blinder from the awesome Benny Boot. Phil Nichol, Craig Campbell, Carl Donnelly, Andrew Maxwell, Kevin Bridges, Ben Norris and the insanely good Terry Alderton (pictured) delivered an amazing show in the Top Secret space of the Europahaus.

Now we’re past the halfway point with only more fab line ups to come, tired minds and legs will be more than happy to relax and laugh away the hangover this afternoon with The Early Edition, followed by another blockbuster gala show line up. Bring it on!

The Latest From Altitude!

The Altitude Comedy Festival has been running for two days now, and we enter the third with a keen sense of sleep depravation, sore legs and belly aches.

The festival started with a bang on Monday afternoon with the Improv All Stars. The Piste Takers Inn filled up with enthusiastic festival-goers curious to see the antics of Stephen Frost, Andy Smart and Phill Jupitus. The afternoon success continued as news filtered through that the opening night Gala was officially SOLD OUT. Cue high fives all round. No surprise really given the line up was beyond incredible. With Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle, Ed Byrne, Brendon Burns and Michael Winslow all performing their best twenties and co-creator Andrew Maxwell hosting the special night. Between Jimmy’s signature ‘Ah-ha-ha!’, Frankie’s unparallelled dark brilliance, Ed Byrne’s whimsy, Winslow’s ridiculous audio abilities and Brendon shouting his happiness out as though he was on top of a mountain. Maxwell held the night together with his typical charm and banter with the crowd.

The first Late Late Show kicked off at midnight to continue the avalanche of funny. Pete Johansson, Phil Nichol, Carl Donnelly, Ian Stone and Brendon Burns all performed to one of the most attentive late night crowds ever seen by the Altitude Festival massive. Shenanigans followed for some, much needed sleep for others!

Then came Tuesday. “First is the worst, second is the best…” goes the phrase from school, and while there’s no doubt that the debut night was a smash hit; last night’s certainly matched the standards set on Monday. The brilliantly funny Tim Minchin (pictured), Kevin Bridges, Milton Jones, Terry Alderton and Marcus Brigstocke had the audience in fits of laughter all night. Rufus Hound‘s enthusiasm was beyond infectious, successfully getting the audience chanting WILD and CRAZY before erupting into applause for the next act. The second of our Late Late Shows kicked off soon after with Carl Donnelly hosting, and sets from Ian Stone, Pete Johansson, Ben Norris and Abandoman (with added Brendon Burns and Phill Jupitus). It was incredible. There’s something unbelievably entertaining about an entire basement room chanting “Shakespeare Porn” as inspired by the collaboration of Abandoman and Ben Norris.

Now Wednesday is upon us, tonight’s main show is already sold out so we excitedly await the arrival of the Cuban Brothers for their solo show in the Piste Takers Inn tonight. Tickets are flying fast for Thursday and Friday, if you are at the festival or in the area, we highly recommend getting your tickets early to guarantee a seat!

Al Murray no longer performing at Altitude

We are very sorry to announce that unfortunately Al Murray won’t be able to perform at Altitude this year due to TV commitments that have been recently confirmed

Al Murray has sent us this:

‘Sorry to everyone who was hoping to see me at Altitude this Spring. Unfortunately I’m not able to get to the Festival.  It’s a great line up, so I’m sure you won’t miss me!’

As Al says, don’t fear – there are still plenty of other phenomenal comedians such as Jimmy Carr, Frankie Boyle, Ed Byrne, Tim Minchin, Kevin Bridges, Michael Winslow and many many more on the line-up!

Check out the full programme here and get your Altitude tickets here!
